Unit 11 Exercises and Discussions

U11d1 Translating Concepts

In what ways have you translated the concepts and skills learned in this course into practical everyday useful ideas?

I have used these concepts and skills into instructional materials including the Dreamweaver and CourseBuilder multiple-choice items and used them at:

http://democracy2020.org and at: http://RBloodworth.com

I plan to use them to construct other webpages and educational material in the future.

U11d2 Reflection 1

1. What from this course was novel, fresh, or new to you? What was familiar or "old hat"?

There were several new software programs (CourseBuilder, Authorware, ViewletBuilder, Hot Potatoes, Designer's Edge, etc.) learning management systems (WebCT, Blackboard), and relevant websites (WebEX, NetMeeting, etc.) to me.

2. In what ways had you already been applying the concepts and skills of this course?

I have been using them to make websites, quizzes, and surveys.

3. What three questions might you now generate about this material?

Is there a list of other available instructional media tools?

What is the in the future for instructional design?

How can I best apply these concepts for productive and effective use?

U11 d3 Reflection 2

1. How did you react emotionally to the information in this course?

I reacted with surprise and amazement with what software programs are now capable of.

2. How did you react cognitively to the information? Do you agree or disagree with the authors' points of view. Why?

I learned a great deal and I believe I agreed on all of her observations as I recall at this moment.

3. In what ways have you translated the concepts and skills of this course into practical, everyday, useful ideas?

I have used the learned programs and I hope that the cognitive learning principles will be applied in the future either consciously or unconsciously.

U11d3 comment to Mark

Mark, It should also be mentioned that besides your website and course exercise you have "translated the concepts and skills of this course into practical, everyday, useful ideas" in the composing of your mathguide.com website.

I enjoyed looking at that site, --- Richard

U11d4 Reflection 3

1. What were the most interesting insights you gained from this course?

One of the most interesting insights learned during this course is that novices perform better at memorizing data within an expert's area than the experts if the rule of the established structure becomes random (as with the experiment with the novice and master chess players).

2. What were the most frustrating moments in this course?

One of the most frustrating moments was looking at my ViewletBuilder exercise and seeing the company's logo watermark emblazoned over the movie image so that the movie was almost unrecognizable. Also, using the WebCT CourseRoom HTML creator which I don't think is as WYSIWYG as it claims.

3. In what assignment did you seem to learn the most?

The sections involving CourseBuilder and ViewletBuilder are the ones in which I learned the most since these are the newest areas to me.

U11 d5 Reevaluation

As you reflect on the theoretical concepts discussed in the text, re-evaluate your experiences with these instructional media tools. Do these tools, or other tools you have used, help you apply these concepts, or do they limit you? At the beginning of the course, you were asked if instructional media tools influence your design. Has your answer to this question changed?

Yes, these tools help apply the learned concepts of learning theory. I believe I thought at the beginning of the course, and I think now, that the use of instructional media tools definitely influence my webpage designs.
