u6d1 Basic Actions Add five of the basic actions to your movie. The five basic actions in Flash are goto , play , stop , stopALLsounds, and getURL . If you have not already done so, add at least one of each of these actions to your Flash project. Write a brief summary of your experience, outlining where you added the actions. Indicate what difficulties you had, if any. Post your project changes and your summary.

Discuss the reading material assigned in this unit, with regard to adding actions to Flash, as well as other features covered in Chapter 18. Comment on at least one learner's project by asking questions and giving opinions or advice.

Your initial page is developing very well. May I ask how you achieved the gradual horizontal pull down menu effect? I would like to use that idea myself (in another class, not this class). ----- Richard

Comment from Jon

The key to this effect was to break the timeline of the navigation movie clip up into equal parts for each sub menu. I labeled the initial keyframe of each segment to something appropriate. The main nav button was then set to jump to that keyframe and play when the user rolls over a particular button. Once the sub menu was dropped down, I told the playhead to stop and hold on the "down" state for that sub menu. I created an invisible button for a previous exercise and placed it around the sub menu so that if the user moved the mouse below or to the right or left of the menu, the playhead would return to frame 1 (which is my "up" state for all sub menus). With each sub navigation item a button symbol, the motion tweening was easy to do. The navigation movie clip is 61 frames long (four sub menus at 15 frames each, plus one "up" frame). There are probably 25-30 layers though (each sub nav button and each vertical bar spacer). If this doesn't explain it well, let me know and I'll send you an FLA with the movie clip in it

If you could send the .fla file that would be great. I think with that and your thorough explanation I should be able to achieve the same effect. Thank you, ----- Richard ---RBloodworth99@yahoo.com

U6d1 comment to Christopher: Your introduction page has very soothing sounds and shapes. And the roller menu items activate great movie clips! ----- Richard

u06d2 Movie Clips and Scenes Add two movie clips and one scene to your project. These additions should relate to your project in some way. Using techniques found in Chapter 19, target your movie clips. Write a paragraph summary about your experience. Be sure to tell us where the movie clip is in your project, and what problems you experienced. Post your edited project and written summary. Comment on at least one learner's project regarding the addition of scenes and movie clips. Ask questions and give opinions or advice concerning the assignment. Discuss your classmates' work and techniques used in controlling or organizing timelines in Flash.

From Kim at LabAssistants:

These pull-down menus (if we're talking about the same thing), are typically made in Fireworks.  In Fireworks, create a hot spot, then modify > pop-up menu > add pop-up menu.  You can create your menu this way, then import it into Dreamweaver.

Your front page is coming along well. I've always liked llamas and their gentleness, etc. I'm like Julie, I'm not sure what those cages are for. Are they for shipping, or perhaps constraining, llamas (or perhaps young children? Also, could you please briefly tell me how you make the drop down menus on your home page? ----- Richard

U6 comment to Allen

Your movie is looking good. Perhaps it would be a good addition to the site to make that TV screen draggable. Just a thought, ----- Richard

U6 comment to Jason

Your Kreative Kids Bedding site has a catchy tune, good informational content, and a very good introductory animated logo. ----- Richard

To Kim about Fireworks: Now I am try to make a pull down or popup menu. I would like for this to occur under the heading buttons at as (was previously) shown at http://www.lc.capellauniversity.edu/~125836/ED722HomePage1Menu.htm .

I have uploaded it so you can look at it there. One square is red so that you can see about where the invisible hit areas will be. I made the bar 20 x 750 pixels so that it would be an invisible bar under the buttons with the menu dropping down horizontally from it. You can see that the hit areas are active but no menu pulls down.

I constructed the pulldowns in Fireworks. The png file works when I press F12 from Fireworks. But when I export the html version to Dreamweaver (according to the instructions of a book I've got about it) only the horizontal bar shows but the menu does not pull down. Is there some other way of exporting or importing a file between Fireworks and Dreamweaver? I have tried everthing I can think of. My book says this can be done using slices which is what I tried. I'll try now, again, using hot spots -- I don't think that Fireworks and Dreamweaver are as compatible as the owner of both, Macromedia, would like for us to believe.

To Amar Almasude: Thank you for your letter. I've added more to both of the sites since I wrote to you so you can check them out when you have a chance.
